Associate Attorney Advisor | AEquitas

AEquitas Associate Attorney Advisors work closely with experienced prosecutors and other allied professionals committed to improving the quality of justice in sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, human trafficking cases, and other criminal cases. They have the opportunity not only to participate in, but to drive criminal justice reform in innovative, informed, and practical ways. Associate Attorney Advisors collaborate with AEquitas staff on a number of special initiatives, and will spend a large part of their time working on grants related to improving prosecution responses to violent crime. They also research the latest case law, legislation, and social science research issues related to the prosecution of gender-based violence, human trafficking, and other violent crimes. Additionally, Associate Attorney Advisors work in conjunction with Attorney Advisors on case consultations, to synthesize legal research, and to develop resources, training materials, and other legal publications. Associate Attorney Advisors are expected to travel occasionally, as needed. They report directly to the Senior Associate Attorney Advisor. The primary duties and responsibilities are bulleted below:

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with prosecutors’ offices and allied professionals on technical assistance requests, case consultations, special initiatives, and the provision of information and resources aimed at enhancing and refining prosecution practices.
  • Work with AEquitas Attorney Advisors on special initiatives—including by providing legal, programmatic, and administrative support to prosecutors’ offices; organizing peer information-sharing events; and reporting grant activities to the Department of Justice.
  • Write, review, edit, and contribute to legal and non-legal publications and other documents—including assisting other AEquitas attorneys and staff with research and review, facilitating internal and external peer review, and reviewing print layout and online publications.
  • Work with other AEquitas attorneys and staff to develop, analyze, and disseminate statutory and case law compilations.
  • Develop AEquitas’ library of resources, and work with other AEquitas staff to collect and organize resources on an ongoing basis.
  • Assist other AEquitas attorneys and staff with preparing and facilitating trainings for a variety of multidisciplinary audiences by conducting and coordinating research on statutes, case law, policies, practices, and emerging
  • Develop, review, and edit training materials for live and web-based events, including curricula and visual aids (Powerpoints).
  • Contribute to the development of proposals for training events, grant solicitations, and other relevant projects.
  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, management, and mentoring of interns.
  • Represent AEquitas at meetings and other events hosted by governmental and non-governmental entities, upon request.
  • Complete special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

  • J.D. and state bar eligibility required.
  • Substantive knowledge relevant to the prosecution of gender-based violence, human trafficking, and other violent crimes.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as good judgment.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to gender-based violence and human trafficking and/or other violent crimes (e.g., homicide, assault).
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work efficiently within time constraints and deadlines.
  • Ability to use a computer to draft documents, perform research, and communicate with AEquitas staff and other individuals.
  • Cultural humility and an ability to work well with individuals and groups from diverse populations and organizations.
  • Proposal writing and grant management experience are helpful.

Attorney Advisor, Focus on Human Trafficking and Sexual Violence | AEquitas

An AEquitas Attorney Advisor serves as an expert to prosecutors and allied justice professionals through the provision of training and technical assistance and the development of publications. An Attorney Advisor researches the latest case law and legislation on issues related to the prosecution of sexual violence, human trafficking, and the related crimes of intimate partner violence and stalking. An Attorney Advisor also identifies innovative programs, procedures, and strategies; provides technical assistance and case consultation to prosecutors and allied criminal justice professionals; develops and delivers trainings for local, state, national, and international audiences; and synthesizes research to write and contribute to publications.

 

Attorney Advisors are “on call” for technical assistance 24 hours a day for one week on a rotating basis and are expected to travel both nationally and internationally as needed. All Attorney Advisors report directly to the AEquitas Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 

Knowledge and Abilities

Required

  • J.D. and state or federal bar membership
  • 10+ years of experience as a trial prosecutor as a first chair in a cold case unit, sexual assault unit, violent crime unit, and/or homicide unit
  • Significant experience prosecuting human trafficking cases (5+ years required)
  • Experience with forensic issues
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as good judgment
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work efficiently within time constraints and deadlines
  • Ability to collaboratively work with individuals and groups from diverse populations and organizations
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships in a team environment by fostering positive working relationships

Preferred

  • Substantive, specialized knowledge and experience in the prosecution of intimate partner violence and stalking cases
  • Strong teaching and/or training experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, web-based communication tools, and research applications (g., Westlaw, G Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Dropbox)
  • Experience writing training and grant proposals and managing grants

Compensation & Benefits Salary is $120,000 and a benefits package covering 100% of employee medical, dental, and vision premiums, 25% of dependents medical, dental, and vision premiums, employer retirement contributions (403b) of 4.75% of annual salary effective after 1 year of the employment, short- and long-term disability, life insurance at 1 x salary up to $200,000, and generous paid time off, including parental leave.

Travel Requirements Average travel time is approximately 10-14 days per month, but could be significantly more depending on program requirements. This travel estimate represents estimates for work conducted outside of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, AEquitas-related travel remains discouraged, but not prohibited and approval by the AEquitas  CEO is required in advance of any plans being made.

Faculty Facilitator (Adjunct) | AEquitas

AEquitas provides technical assistance and training to develop the knowledge and skills of prosecutors and allied professionals working with cases involving sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, human trafficking, and related violent crimes, with the aim of increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes in these cases.  Positive outcomes are not limited to criminal convictions—they are outcomes in which the victim is protected and has access to justice, the offender is held accountable, and the community has confidence in the criminal justice system. 

AEquitas training events focus on a multidisciplinary approach.  Such an approach requires facilitation by experienced and knowledgeable professionals from various fields, including but not limited to prosecutors, victim advocates, law enforcement officers, judges, crime scene investigators, forensic nurse examiners, medical examiners, toxicologists, sex offender treatment providers, batterer intervention program facilitators, community-based service providers, faith-based service providers, medical and mental health practitioners, and probation and parole officers. AEquitas routinely works with individuals (as volunteers or contractors) with expertise in these areas as Faculty Facilitators to collaborate with full-time AEquitas staff during local, state, national, and international training events.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience. Additionally, a bachelor’s degree, law degree, medical degree, or graduate degree in a related field may be necessary, depending upon the standards of the profession.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and/or human trafficking. Experience as a prosecutor or as a professional working collaboratively with prosecutors is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with public speaking and as a training facilitator. 
  • Excellent oral and written comprehension and expression required. 
  • Computer literacy, including strong Microsoft Word and PowerPoint skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good judgment, both professionally and while interacting with allied professionals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities
The services a Faculty Facilitator may provide include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing, reviewing, and editing live and web-based training materials, curricula, and related resources. 
  • Recommending resources for use by prosecutors and allied professionals. 
  • Delivering presentations for international, national, state, and local multidisciplinary audiences. 
  • Working with a team and one-on-one with individual prosecutors and allied professionals to provide information and resources aimed at enhancing and refining their knowledge.

Faculty Facilitators will be selected as needed on a case-by-case basis and may be compensated depending upon the availability of funds for such purposes.  Travel-related expenses associated with attending training events will be reimbursed in accordance with AEquitas guidelines.  Faculty Facilitators are not employees of AEquitas for any purpose.

Legal Intern | AEquitas

1L, 2L, 3L, and LLM students interested in a career of criminal prosecution and working with issues concerning sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and human trafficking are encouraged to apply. Specific topics of legal research may include battered women charged with crimes, stalking in the technology age, victim-centered prosecution strategies, victim behavior, intimidation, forfeiture by wrongdoing, strangulation, interpreting toxicology, domestic violence homicides, role of sexual assault nurse examiners, and evaluating medical experts and other relevant evidentiary or procedural issues. In addition to researching developing areas of law, interns will have an opportunity to gain insight to the practical application of their research to the courtroom. They will learn how prosecutors utilize evidence in court, address issues of admissibility, and use experts in trial. Interns will be involved in the organization of state specific and national training events on sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and human trafficking and may have the opportunity to attend trainings where feasible.

Responsibilities

  • Research and synthesize statutes and relevant case law
  • Identify pending legislation and emerging issues concerning sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and human trafficking
  • Compile and maintain sample trial motions, briefs, and transcripts
  • Assist in the development of resources for frontline prosecutors and allied professionals
  • Assist in writing and editing newsletters, monographs, and other national publications
  • Assist in organizing and hosting state specific and national training events on sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and human trafficking
  • Support AEquitas Attorney Advisors as needed

Applicant Qualifications

  • 1L, 2L, or 3L in an ABA accredited law school
  • Superb research and legal writing skills
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in use of Westlaw and other online legal search tools
  • Demonstrated interest in criminal justice, prosecution, and issues of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and human trafficking
  • Ability to work with others and independently as needed
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented
  • Completed criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence courses preferred, not required
